Written By Kristal Kent - Founder of Veteran Voices For Fibromyalgia
On Wednesday May 15th, I had the opportunity to speak with the Veteran Affairs Secretary, Dennis McDonough, regarding the systemic issues with the VA's delivery of telemedicine appointments to our Nation's Veterans.
I shared my personal experiences with this issue, provided data my organization, Veteran Voices For Fibromyalgia, collected through a Veteran driven research survey, and spoke about the need to partner on this issue, in order to develop strategies when technology fails, to maintain Continuity of Care to Veterans, and ensure Veterans do not run out of medications as a result.
Sharing your story is a powerful tool to initiate change for the better! Further, coming to the table with documentation, and proposing ideas versus saying "fix this" is your strongest ally when advocating for change!
You can listen to my presentation in this video starting at 53 minutes and 26 seconds. 2 things of note, I touched upon the previous Veteran's issue with being able to apply for Service-Connected Conditions, due to his records being lost by the Coast Guard. In addition, the Veteran who spoke immediately after I did, also relayed he had issues with the delivery of his telemedicine appointments at the Veterans Affairs Health Department.
After the meeting, I spoke with the VA secretary and his staff, provided my written documentation and data on this issue. I provided my contact information, and I obtained their contact info as well.
